『  校際語言學習交流計劃 』
Campus Based Language Learning Exchanges

What is CABLLE ? A brief introduction:

The Campus Based Language Learning Exchanges (CABLLE) is sponsored by the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALAC) and the Columbia Center of New Media Teaching and Learning (CNMTL). VoiceThread is used to facilitate CABLLE.

CABLLE is a project initiated by Our Campus Lives Workshop (OCLWorkshop) – a group of intermediate Chinese heritage students from the Chinese language program in Columbia’s EALAC Department along with the assistance of faculty and technology from the Columbia Center of New Media Teaching and Learning.

CABLLE is designed to make language learning a ‘learn by experience’ exercise. There is a specially designed set of practical tasks that apply lessons from the classroom to the “language lab” world beyond Columbia’s gates. By using VoiceThread, students directly connect to their Chinese peers across the Pacific Ocean. This is the pen pal of the twenty-first century—allowing students to make friends across the globe without the flights.

In the new global and technological world, innovation is happening at an unprecedented pace. Pedagogically, learning and teaching are being challenged as concepts. The current theories, such as active learning, participatory learning, collaborative learning, as well as exploratory learning, all call for new improved approaches inside and out of the classroom. These new friendships give the students a real recipient and a personal incentive to learn the language.

CABLLE is designed to fit in the traditional and established course model while also adding an innovative feature that help address these ‘learning’ and ‘teaching’ challenges.
