Abstract: The teaching of the Chinese language as witnessed by the speaker has changed dramatically over the past sixty-five years. Acquiring language facility is still hard work but the advances in the analysis of the language, better teaching materials, professionalization of the instructors, and more advanced pedagogy enable the student to reach new levels of competence in shorter periods of time.
